UD training/practice this morning was predictably unpredictable. The wind this morning was particularly gusty. So much so that the garden furniture wasn’t just blown over, it was inverted. Just minutes after the second dog/handler finished their run (Hi Werner!), the “solid jump” migrated at speed about 20m from the normal ring position to the [...] October 17th 2005 Gemma came home with me. Today, she’s being mercilessly teased by her own daughter… who has had a few ‘accidents’ today due to brief periods of inattention. Sigh. Well, someone understands what a click means Today, Shadow was jaunting around at the other end of the garden and stopped to have a pee. From 15 metres away, her little doggy ears heard a distinct “click!” as she finished, turned with a start to look at me, and ran full-speed towards me [...] Our Utility practice session this morning was going pretty well up until the signals exercise. We’d only dropped a handful of points overall. She didn’t want to hold the ‘down’ position I had to give several cues on more than one occasion to get Gemma to stay put in the ‘down’ position, and [...] We braved the unstable weather today and went for our first ‘real’ run in ages. A loop around the lake with side trips equates to about 10km, added to about 1km of chasing the Aerobie at the big oval. Gem isn’t quite in tip-top shape yet, but she still managed nearly 2km flat-out at [...] People often ask me how I get Gemma’s coat to shine the way it does. There isn’t really much to the secret. Firstly, her coat has a natural oil that makes it really glossy and shiny (that helps!) but secondarily, it comes from her diet. Between the Science Diet kibble she eats, and the [...] The morning wasn’t anything to write home about. Hang on, that’s effectively what I’m doing right now… so I suppose it was. Kinda. This was always about getting back in the habit of the trial ring. We had to pull out of the ET and the last UD trials in May/June because she was [...] Our Lodger, Sooty, winged his way to his new Melbourne home at lunchtime today. Early accounts suggest that he’s having a great old time in his new home, and has already stolen a heart or two. We did a bit of shopping for Shadow today, and fitted her out with a new crate to [...] Shades of Gemma. Gemma, part II. Shadow experienced a leash for the first time today. And hated every second of it. One might say that it’s a good omen, that she had exactly the same reaction as Gemma. Get that damned thing OFF me. NOW! With Sooty flying out after only two more sleeps, [...] Another soggy day outside, so it was lucky that Gem and I woke early and had our walk already. The kids are tearing the inside of the house apart. It’s a full-time job watching what they’re biting into next… So I started their UD training by giving them the spare “articles” to play with [...] |
